Thirty-eight studies were included that reported using 12 modification management methods in health care contexts throughout 10 countries. The most commonly applied approaches were Kotter's Model (19 research studies) and Lewin's Model (11 studies). Change management methods were applied in projects at local ward or system level (14 ), institutional level (12) and system or multi-system (6) levels.


Change management methods were often used as directing concept to underpin a modification in intricate healthcare contexts. The absence of prescription application of the change management methodologies was identified. Modification management approaches were valued for providing directing concepts for change that are well matched to make it possible for methods to be applied in the context of complex and unique health care contexts, and to be used in synergy with execution and enhancement approaches.
